Perinatal Mental Health Awareness Week 2020
Following on from the incredibly powerful conversations during Perinatal Mental Health Week 2019, Perinatal Mental Health Week 2020 is a further chance to Start listening to what’s not being said by expectant and new parents.
1 in 5 new mums and 1 in 10 new dads will experience perinatal depression and anxiety.
Supporting a parent who is experiencing emotional distress involves asking the right questions and then engaging in active listening, but what about what’s not being said?
The stigma around mental health, especially in parenting, still exists.
Parents are bombarded with images and messages on social media and other channels portraying the picture-perfect experience.
“I wish I could tell you how I really feel.”
For an expectant and new parent in emotional distress, what’s not being said is even more important than what is said.
“I know I’m meant to be happy.”
Scrolling through Instagram with a new baby sleeping or feeding, new parents are vulnerable to the pressure to have it all together. But what if you’re not feeling happy, joyful, ok? What if the things you are not saying are the things that you really need to say aloud?
